Why Upgrade to the DAHAO A15 Control System
June 30, 2026
— For owners of embroidery machines still running an older control system
Introduction: Your machine still works — but your control system is holding it back
Many machines we see are mechanically in good condition: a solid frame, a smooth rotary hook, accurate needle bars. The only weak point is the control system — ten-year-old electronics that cannot read modern design files, will not recognize a USB drive, has a dim display, unreliable thread-break detection, and throws color-change alarms for no reason.
A machine like this is the last machine you should scrap — and the best candidate for a control-system upgrade.
Replacing the control system is not “repairing a machine.” It is giving a mechanically sound machine a modern brain. And the DAHAO BECS-A15 is currently the most mature, best-supported, and easiest-to-service control platform for single-head household embroidery machines.
1. Why upgrade: six problems you cannot avoid with an old control system
1.1 Design-file formats are increasingly incompatible
Older systems usually read only their own proprietary format. Customer-supplied DST, DSB, or EXP files often fail to import — or import with wrong stitch counts and colors. Today, the first thing a customer says is: *”I’ll send you the file.”*
A15 reads mainstream embroidery formats directly from a USB drive. This is not a convenience issue — it is about whether you can accept the job at all.
1.2 The USB port is unusable
Some older control systems use USB 1.1; others use a proprietary format. Drives over 16 GB are simply not recognized. Modern design packages are hundreds of megabytes — you cannot transfer them with tools from the floppy-disk era.
The A15 operation box is equipped with both USB and network interfaces (Source: Official Installation & Commissioning Manual, Section 2.2 — Operation Box B104H). USB and LAN, either method works.
1.3 Thread-break detection is effectively useless
Older systems suffer from severe sensitivity drift. Either it fails to alarm (the machine keeps stitching on a broken thread and ruins the whole run), or it alarms constantly (stopping even when nothing is broken, killing productivity). This is the single biggest factor affecting both output quality and operator patience.
The A15 provides a complete thread-break detection commissioning menu allowing calibration needle-position by needle-position. The official manual explicitly requires: *”Every needle position must be tested individually; otherwise an untested position may trigger thread-break alarm faults.”*
1.4 Inaccurate color changes and frequent alarms
Older systems position the color change using a potentiometer. Over time the resistance drifts, causing color-change timeouts, abnormal half-rotation, and needle positions that no longer match. This is the most common failure category in old control systems.
The A15 has a standard potentiometer calibration procedure, and the screen shows the current needle-position value in real time (“empty” or 1–15). Calibration is visual — no more guessing.
1.5 No spare parts, no documentation, no one to repair it
This is the most critical point. Once an older control system has been out of production for years, the driver boards, operation boxes, and dedicated motors are all discontinued. A failure means scrapping the machine or improvising a conversion. A machine you cannot buy parts for is already dead — it just hasn’t stopped running yet.
The A15 is a current, in-production platform:
| Item | Status |
| Main control box | In production (A15-BH / A15-KH / A15-H) |
| Operation box | In production (type B104H) |
| Drives / motors | In production, with officially published part numbers |
| Official manuals | Publicly available (Installation Manual V2.0 + Operation Manual 2020-04) |
| Spare-part supply | Ongoing |
1.6 No technical documentation — no way to diagnose anything
Old manuals are long gone. Fault codes have no published meaning. Nobody knows how the parameters should be set.
The A15 official documentation is public and complete: an Installation & Commissioning Manual (56 pages) and an Operation Manual (137 pages), listing handling procedures for error codes EC05 through EC166 entry by entry. You — or your local technician — can service this machine yourself.
2. What the A15 gives you: new capability for an older machine
2.1 Hardware specifications
| Item | A15 specification (Official Manual, Section 1.2) |
| Power supply | AC 88 V – 264 V wide range (universal worldwide voltage) |
| Frequency | 47 Hz – 63 Hz |
| Operating temperature | 0 °C – 40 °C |
| Operating humidity | 30 % – 95 % (non-condensing) |
| Speed range | 400 – 1,200 RPM |
| Pattern storage | 400 patterns |
| Number of colors | Up to 15 |
| Stitching mode | Flat stitching (can be combined with special embellishment such as sequin or cord embroidery) |
| Main shaft | Servo motor |
| Frame drive | X / Y three-phase micro-step stepper motors (type 57 or 86) |
| Color change / trimming / hooking / jump | Two-phase 42 stepper motors, rated current 1 A |
The wide-voltage design matters especially for export customers. AC 88 V – 264 V means the machine runs directly on 100 V in Japan, 230 V in Europe, or 110 V / 220 V in Latin America — no external transformer required. For export markets, this alone is a strong argument for the A15.
2.2 Functional capabilities
Direct USB read + network transfer — no file conversion needed to accept a job
Needle-by-needle thread-break calibration — accurate alarms, no missed detections
Visual color-change calibration — read the needle-position value directly on screen
Complete commissioning menu — main shaft, trimming, hooking, jump, and color change each testable individually
15-color capability — no need to split multi-color designs
Supports additional special embroidery (sequin, cord, etc.) — a wider range of work than flat stitching alone
3. IMPORTANT: machines the A15 is NOT suitable for
Please read this section in full before ordering, so you do not end up with a system that cannot be installed.
DAHAO’s positioning of the A15 is unambiguous. The official manual cover reads:
“BECS-A15 Series Single-Head Household Computerized Embroidery Machine Control System”
The officially listed compatible machine types are exactly three (Installation Manual, Section 2.1):
| Model | Description |
| A15-BH | Single/Doble -head machine control box |
| A15-KH | Single-head machine control box |
| A15-H | Household single-head machine control box |
| A15-H-Household | Special one |
| A15-2A-KH | Double-heads machines |
3.1 NOT suitable: non-Chinese (imported brand) machines
The A15 is a complete control system designed for Chinese-made single-head household embroidery machines — it is not a universal retrofit kit. It is not applicable to imported brand machines, for three hard reasons:
1. Mechanical interfaces do not match
The A15 motors, operation box, and control box are all designed around the frame dimensions and mounting hole positions of Chinese-made single-head machines. The mechanical relationships in the factory drawings (needle bar frame, rotary hook box, thread trimmer mechanism, selector fork) are all built for Chinese machine types. Imported machines use entirely different frame structures, mounting positions, and transmission arrangements.
2. Electrical interfaces are incompatible
The A15 interface definitions are configured for the encoders and limit switches of Chinese machine types: CN1 = Y-axis encoder, CN2 = X-axis encoder, CN3 = main shaft encoder, CN4 = Y-axis limit, CN5 = X-axis limit, CN6 = main shaft origin, CN7 = peripheral communication CAN, CN8 = operation communication HMI, CN9 = Y-axis motor, CN10 = X-axis motor.
Imported machines typically use different encoder types, signal levels, and limit-switch arrangements. If it does not connect, it does not connect — no amount of parameter adjustment will fix it.
3. Explicitly excluded by the manufacturer
The official manual’s commissioning instructions are written for the scenario of “the complete machine manufacturer performing final assembly.” The potentiometer calibration section states plainly:
“The potentiometer values calibrated here are all determined based on the potentiometers supplied by ‘Beijing Dahao Technology Corp., Ltd.’ If a machine manufacturer uses a potentiometer of another model, it must promptly notify our company’s relevant technical personnel for consultation and confirmation; otherwise, responsibility for any inaccurate color change on the machine shall be borne by the corresponding manufacturer. No individual using the machine may arbitrarily change or substitute the potentiometer model; otherwise the consequences shall be borne by themselves.“
The meaning is straightforward: for combinations that deviate from the officially supplied components, DAHAO offers no endorsement, assumes no liability, and guarantees no result. That is the situation you are in when fitting an A15 to a non-Chinese machine.
3.2 NOT suitable: specially customized machines
The following cases must be verified item by item, and are by default regarded as not suitable:
| Customization case | Why it is not suitable |
| Non-single-head machines | The A15 is officially positioned as a single-head control box; multi-head machines are outside its scope |
| Head count / needle count outside standard | The official color-change procedure is explicitly written for 12-needle or 15-needle machines (12-needle: positions 6 or 7; 15-needle: position 8). Needle bar frames outside this range are not within the design premise |
| Machines with modified mechanical structure | Machines fitted with non-original needle bar frames, thread trimmer mechanisms, or rotary hook boxes, or where the transmission ratio has been altered |
| Non-standard or oversized frames | A15 frame drive is configured for type 57 or 86 three-phase micro-step stepper motors; oversized frames present a mismatched load |
| Non-standard potentiometer or motors | Color-change positioning depends on the potentiometer; a non-official model causes inaccurate color changes, and the manufacturer explicitly disclaims liability |
| Modified electrical system | Systems already fitted with non-original drives, non-standard power supplies, or self-installed electrical modules |
| Special-purpose converted machines | Machines converted for non-standard embroidery applications (special materials, special operating conditions) |
The rule in one sentence: If it is a standard Chinese-made single-head machine and you are only replacing the control system without touching the mechanics, you can upgrade. If the mechanics have been modified, the head or needle count is non-standard, or the machine is not Chinese-made — ask us first. Do not order directly.
4. Four things to confirm before ordering
| No. | Item to confirm | How to confirm | If it does not comply |
| 1 | Is the machine a Chinese-made single-head machine? | Check the frame nameplate; ask the original machine builder | Not Chinese-made → not suitable; do not order |
| 2 | Is the needle count 12 or 15? | Count the needle bars | Other needle counts → contact us for individual confirmation |
| 3 | Are the mechanics unmodified and original? | Check whether the needle bar frame, thread trimmer, and rotary hook box are original | Modified → send us photos for assessment |
| 4 | Is the potentiometer the original supplied type? | Check the color-change potentiometer model | Not original → must be replaced with the original part, otherwise color changes will be inaccurate and no quality guarantee applies |
If you are unsure about any of these four items, contact us first and send photos of your machine — we will help you determine suitability. Better to ask one extra question than to order something that cannot be installed.
5. What performance to expect after the upgrade
After fitting the A15 and completing standard commissioning, the machine should achieve:
✅ Accurate color change at every needle position, with no color-change timeout or half-rotation alarms
✅ Sensitive and accurate thread-break detection, verified position by position
✅ Clean thread trimming — no thread loss at start, no fabric pulling at trim
✅ Thread hooking knife extends and retracts freely, with correct automatic return
✅ No presser-foot vibration and no abnormal noise during jump stitches
✅ Both USB and network transfer of designs working normally
✅ Frame position recoverable after power loss (requires frame origin setup to be completed)
Critical reminder: The official manual explicitly requires — *”Setting the frame origin is the basis for remembering the pattern start point and for frame recovery after power interruption. Therefore, the frame origin setup operation should be performed once after machine installation and after maintenance.”*
If this step is skipped, the pattern position is lost after a power interruption — effectively meaning the upgrade was for nothing. Please confirm this item during acceptance.

Frequently asked questions
Q1: My machine is an imported brand. Can I fit an A15?
No. The A15 is a complete control system designed for Chinese-made single-head embroidery machines. The mechanical and electrical interfaces of non-Chinese machines do not match, and the manufacturer does not guarantee the result. In this case we recommend contacting that brand’s original service network.
Q2: My machine has two or four heads. Will it work?
The A15 is officially positioned as a single-head or mutil-heads machine control box; If you have a multi-head machine, tell us the head count and we will recommend the corresponding multi-head control system.
Q3: My machine was modified previously. Can I still upgrade?
It depends what was modified. If the mechanical structure has been altered (non-original needle bar frame, trimmer, or rotary hook box fitted), the transmission ratio changed, or the electrical system already contains non-original modules, we need photos for assessment first. Please do not order directly.
Q4: Can I replace only the control system and keep the mechanics?
That is precisely the standard scenario for an A15 upgrade — sound mechanics, outdated control system. We recommend keeping the mechanical parts original, as this gives the most reliable matching relationship.
Q5: Will my existing design files still work?
Mainstream formats (DST / DSB / EXP and others) can be imported. For specific format support, send us the files you have and we will test them.
Q6: Is commissioning complicated? Do I need a professional?
The main shaft, trimming, hooking, jump, color change, and thread-break detection all have official commissioning menus and standard procedures, and we provide complete work instructions. A technician with electrical qualifications and familiarity with embroidery machine structure can complete the work following our instructions. If you are not experienced, we recommend engaging a professional service technician and requesting our instruction document in advance.
Summary
For an older machine with sound mechanics, upgrading to the A15 control system is the most cost-effective improvement available — parts are in production, documentation is public, commissioning is documented, and service is available.
But the prerequisites are: Chinese-made, standard model, unmodified mechanics.
If your machine does not meet all four conditions, contact us first. Do not rush into an order.
